Hello -

This is Carie Mullikin Kutno with a long over-due update to this page.

In September of 2018 my husband, Phil Kutno, passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer.   As I'm writing this it has been just over three years since that terrible day.  When Phil asked me to carry on the legacy of his art and his life, I had no idea how diffcult and how long the grieving process would be.  It never seems to end, but you do become accustomed and slowly figure out how to move forward.  I am going to do my very best to honor my beloved and his wishes.

The following is the original bio Phil and I crafted together and I've decided to leave it as is.  I hope you can take a moment to read it and get to know Phil a little more than you perhaps already did.

Thank you - Carie Kutno

I am an American artist.  A shabby conglomeration of disparate ideas and opinions, admirations and contradictions.  With my relentless drive to make drawings and paintings, I have been a professional artist all of my adult life.  Born in Brooklyn, NY, I then spent most of my childhood in Freehold , NJ., where I started drawing at a very early age.  Though many of my hours were spent haunting the halls of the great New York Art Museums, I never took art classes in grammar or high school.  Finally, in my second year of college and while pursuing a political science degree, I took a drawing and painting class and was immediately seduced by the formal process of learning to make art.  I went on to receive a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and a Masters degree from Humboldt State University - both in Painting.

I have spent over thirty years making and selling art professionally and I work art and music festivals nationally.  My first formal art festival was Virginia Beach Art Festival in 1985 where I received the award for Most Promising Artist.  I went on to spend many years selling my work on the road with the Grateful Dead, Lollapalooza, Ozzfest, Furthur, Pink Floyd, HORDE tour and many other music tours.  Around 1995, I started participating more heavily in the art festival circuit. Initially, these were mostly on the west coast, but I soon began to show my work nationally.  The shows are too many too list of course, (eventually I will try and assemble a resume list to add to this website).  Into the 2000's I began to show and sell at many of the major weekend music festivals and these shows, combined with the art festivals, make up the majority of my schedule today.

The drawings and paintings that I offer on this website can be divided simply into two categories.  Stream of consciousness figurative pencil drawings that span from 1988 to present and portraiture of cultural figures rendered in pencil and in oil paint.

Currently my wife Carie and I live in Tucson AZ.  Carie is the creator of this website and she is also in charge of order fulfillment.  Please feel free to email her at philkutnostudios@earthlink.net if you have any questions or need any help with ordering.
